Advenella faeciporci ZF1 Bacteria Used to Desalinate Water and Generate Electricity in Microbial Cells

Researchers have identified *Advenella faeciporci* ZF1, a bacterium isolated from oil refinery sludge, as a functional agent for microbial desalination cells. The study demonstrates that this specific strain acts as an iron-reducing bacterium, facilitating the removal of salt from water while simultaneously generating electricity through its metabolic processes.

The research team isolated the ZF1 strain from contaminated refinery waste and tested its performance in a microbial desalination cell (MDC) configuration. During the experimental trials, the bacteria oxidized organic matter, which released electrons to the anode and supported the reduction of iron at the cathode. This electrochemical activity drove the migration of salt ions across ion-exchange membranes, effectively desalinating the water within the system. The findings indicate that *A. faeciporci* ZF1 maintains stability in high-salinity environments, suggesting a potential application for treating industrial wastewater while recovering energy.
