A recent study has introduced advancements in forensic science by demonstrating a method to determine the sex of individuals using thermally treated human hair. Researchers, including Gunashree B., Thomas M.W., and Rawat S., have utilized artificial intelligence (AI) in combination with Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy to analyze hair samples. This approach aims to enhance the accuracy of sex determination in biological evidence, which could play a critical role in criminal investigations.

The research focused on the chemical composition of human hair subjected to thermal treatment and how these changes can be analyzed using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. By applying AI algorithms, the team was able to identify patterns and differences between male and female hair samples based on their spectral data. The findings highlight the potential for this technique to provide reliable results even when traditional DNA analysis is not possible due to sample degradation or contamination. The study represents a step forward in forensic methodologies, offering an additional tool for investigators handling complex cases involving biological evidence.
