AI Designs New Mitochondrial Targeting Sequences, Expanding Toolkit for Cellular Research

Researchers at the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology have demonstrated that generative artificial intelligence can design new mitochondrial targeting sequences. These sequences are important because they direct proteins to the mitochondrion, a critical component of the cell. The study suggests AI’s potential in designing these sequences. The mitochondrion, often called the cell’s powerhouse, is essential for various cellular functions. Scientists target it for studies, metabolic engineering, and disease therapies. However, the number of existing mitochondrial targeting sequences are limited. This new research explores the use of generative AI to expand the toolkit of available sequences.
