American Universities Contributed Patents to 50 Percent of FDA-Approved Drugs from 2020 to 2024
A recent analysis has revealed that universities played a significant role in the development of medicines approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 2020 and 2024. The findings show that academic institutions contributed patents to half of all FDA-approved drugs during this period, with American universities accounting for 87% of those contributions.
The study examined patents listed in the FDA’s Orange Book, which tracks intellectual property associated with approved drugs. Researchers found that universities were responsible for key innovations underpinning 50% of these medications. Among these academic contributions, institutions based in the United States dominated, representing nearly nine out of ten breakthroughs attributed to academia. This data highlights the substantial involvement of American universities in advancing pharmaceutical research and development during the specified timeframe.
