April 20, 1955: Swedish Biologist Svante Pääbo Was Born
Svante Pääbo (April 20, 1955 – present), Swedish biologist specializing in evolutionary genetics, is the authority for Neanderthal genome research. In 1997, he led the project of decoding the Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA. Collaborating with the team at 454 Life Science, a biotechnology company specialized in high-throughput DNA sequencing, Dr. Pääbo published a preliminary genetic map of the Neanderthal genome al genome was published in February, 2009.
