Arizona Public Service (APS) announced plans on July 2, 2026, to convert the Cholla Power Plant from coal-fired generation to natural gas. The utility company intends to transition the facility’s operations to support the regional power grid while moving away from coal-based energy production.

The conversion project involves retrofitting the existing infrastructure at the Joseph City, Arizona site to accommodate natural gas as the primary fuel source. APS officials stated that this shift aligns with the company’s broader strategy to manage its energy portfolio and maintain grid reliability. The transition process includes decommissioning the current coal-burning units and installing the necessary equipment to process natural gas. APS expects the facility to continue providing electricity to its customers throughout the state once the conversion reaches completion.
