Barclays Launches Shiller CAPE US SMID Sector Index for Small- and Mid-Cap Equities
Barclays introduced the Shiller Barclays CAPE® US SMID Sector Index on Wednesday, expanding its suite of investment benchmarks. The new index tracks the performance of small- and mid-cap (SMID) companies within the United States, utilizing the Cyclically Adjusted Price-to-Earnings (CAPE®) methodology developed by Nobel laureate Robert Shiller.
The index applies a systematic, rules-based approach to rotate exposure across various U.S. market sectors. By incorporating the CAPE® ratio, the index identifies sectors that appear undervalued relative to their historical averages while maintaining a focus on companies with smaller market capitalizations. Barclays designed this benchmark to provide investors with a quantitative tool for assessing sector rotation strategies within the SMID-cap segment. The launch adds to the existing family of CAPE®-based indices, which Barclays manages to offer market participants data-driven insights into equity valuations.
