Black & Veatch and Stantec to Lead Brandon Road Interbasin Project to Deter Invasive Species
A joint venture between engineering firms Black & Veatch and Stantec will lead the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Brandon Road Interbasin Project, an initiative designed to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins. The project focuses on the Brandon Road Lock and Dam in Joliet, Illinois, where the team will implement a multi-layered system of technologies to deter invasive carp and other non-native species from migrating through the waterway.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers selected the joint venture to provide comprehensive engineering, design, and construction management services for the project. The planned infrastructure includes an array of deterrents, such as an electric barrier, an acoustic deterrent system, a bubble curtain, and a flushing lock. These technologies aim to disrupt the movement of invasive species while maintaining the operational efficiency of the waterway for commercial navigation. The project represents a significant effort to protect the ecological integrity of the Great Lakes ecosystem by creating a physical and sensory barrier at this critical transit point.
