A groundbreaking study conducted by the research team at MedUni Vienna and University Hospital Vienna has unveiled significant advancements in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma, the most prevalent form of skin cancer. This new therapy, involving the active substance TVEC, has shown promising results in reducing tumor size and aiding surgical removal.

Basal cell carcinomas typically develop in areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to sunlight, such as the face. These tumors can be particularly challenging to treat when they advance locally. The innovative approach tested by the Vienna-based researchers involved TVEC, a therapeutic agent that not only reduced tumor size but also led to complete regression in some cases.

The study’s findings indicate that all participants experienced a reduction in tumor size, which facilitated easier and more effective surgical interventions. Moreover, some patients saw their tumors completely regress as a result of this novel therapy.

These promising outcomes could represent a significant step forward in the management and treatment of skin cancer, offering hope for less invasive treatments and improved patient outcomes.
