Following the success of its Annual Conferences from 2022 to 2024, the Boston Taiwanese Biotechnology Association (BTBA), in partnership with the Science and Technology Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Boston, is actively preparing for the highly anticipated 2025 BTBA Symposium, set to take place this July at Harvard University. Designed to be more than a traditional academic gathering, the symposium aims to spark bold interdisciplinary dialogue and drive innovation across biotech, pharmaceutical sciences, and global health.

Event to Advance Global Collaboration and Talent Development to Strengthen Taiwan’s Biotech Workforce

With a firm foundation in knowledge exchange and community-building, the 2025 event will serve as a launching point for future collaboration and talent development—especially for Taiwanese students and researchers abroad. Organizers hope to help students expand their international exposure, build meaningful professional connections, and contribute to a globally competitive biotech workforce. The long-term vision also includes encouraging experienced professionals to return to Taiwan, while simultaneously promoting global understanding and engagement in Taiwan’s burgeoning biotech landscape.

This year, with support from Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), BTBA is also focused on strengthening ties among Taiwanese researchers in Boston and around the world, with a strong emphasis on academic networking, professional development, and job opportunities across sectors.

Distinguished Keynotes and Visionary Talks

The 2025 symposium boasts an impressive lineup of keynote and invited speakers. These include Dr. Michael J. McKenna, co-founder and Chief Surgical Officer of Akouos (now an Eli Lilly subsidiary), a leader in gene therapy for hereditary hearing loss; Dr. Kornelia Polyak, an internationally recognized breast cancer expert and professor at Harvard University and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; and Dr. Sheng-Hong Chen, Associate Research Fellow at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Molecular Biology and founding president of BTBA.

These speakers represent the ongoing strength of Taiwan–U.S. cooperation in advancing biomedical science and translational research.

AI in Biotech: Transforming Discovery, Diagnosis, and Development

At the forefront of this year’s agenda is a spotlight panel on artificial intelligence in biotechnology, showcasing how AI is revolutionizing therapeutic discovery, diagnostics, and development. Panelists include experts from global pharmaceutical firms, next-generation biotech startups, and top-tier AI research institutions. Their diverse professional backgrounds span drug development, machine learning-based molecular design, generative protein models, and clinical decision-support systems.

Together, they will share how AI is accelerating drug discovery pipelines, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and pushing the boundaries of precision medicine. This cross-sector dialogue promises an illuminating look into how computation and biology are converging to shape the next era of healthcare innovation.

Panels Addressing Critical Issues in Health and Innovation

The symposium will also feature four topical panels that highlight major areas of growth, debate, and opportunity in life sciences:

  • Personalized Medicine – Exploring how genomic data, targeted therapies, and individualized treatment strategies are transforming patient care.
  • Consulting in Biotech – Providing insights into life science strategy, commercialization, and the evolving role of consultants in innovation ecosystems.
  • Anti-Aging – Investigating breakthroughs in longevity science, cellular rejuvenation, and biomarkers of aging.
  • Infectious Diseases – Bringing together experts in virology, diagnostics, and public health, this panel will reflect on global pandemic response and look forward to new tools for prevention and preparedness.

Each panel is designed to foster interdisciplinary conversation, featuring a blend of academic, industry, and policy perspectives.

Networking with Purpose: Career Roundtables and Community Connection

To complement the academic programming, the 2025 symposium will feature a Career Development Roundtable, offering attendees the opportunity to engage directly with professionals across academia, biotech startups, and pharmas. These sessions are designed to provide personalized guidance and insights on transitioning between sectors, navigating postdoctoral pathways, and finding meaningful work in biotech.

A Breakfast Networking Session will offer a relaxed, welcoming space for connections among attendees. This informal gathering is tailored to support relationship-building across disciplines and career stages—whether you’re seeking collaborators, mentors, job leads, or simply a place to exchange ideas.

A Decade of Impact and a Future of Opportunity

Over the past ten years, BTBA has become a cornerstone of the Greater Boston biotech community, regularly drawing over 300 participants from Taiwan and across the United States each year. The association’s dedication to cultivating future biotech leaders has been evident in its history of hosting luminaries such as Dr. Chi-Huey Wong, Dr. James Liao, Dr. Li-Huei Tsai, Dr. David Ho, Dr. Taiyin Yang, Dr. Seng Cheng, Dr. George Church, Dr. Liz Kwo, Dr. Laura Sepp-Lorenzino, and Dr. Samir Mitragotri.

The 2025 BTBA Annual Symposium promises to carry this momentum forward, offering a rich platform for scientific learning, professional connection, and visionary exchange—strengthening the global biotech community through shared goals and cross-cultural collaboration.
