Chemical Impurities Reduce Friction on Amorphous Carbon Surfaces

Researchers from Osaka Metropolitan University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM have identified that specific chemical impurities can significantly reduce friction on amorphous carbon surfaces. The study demonstrates that, contrary to the traditional view that impurities degrade material performance, certain additives can induce a “super-slippery” state under controlled conditions.

The research team analyzed how these chemical inclusions alter the atomic structure and surface interactions of carbon-based materials. By introducing specific elements into the amorphous carbon matrix, the scientists observed a reduction in the shear strength between sliding surfaces. This process effectively lowers the energy required for movement, resulting in a notable decrease in friction. The findings provide new data on the mechanical properties of carbon materials and offer insights into how chemical composition influences surface behavior at the microscopic level.
