Driving Global Healthcare Innovation: ASGH and Medical Fair 2026 Propel Industry Breakthroughs

The fifth International Healthcare Week, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), is currently underway in Hong Kong and runs through the end of May 2026. The campaign recently celebrated the successful conclusion of its two flagship events: the 6th Asia Summit on Global Health (ASGH) and the 17th Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair (Medical Fair). Co-organized by the Hong Kong Government and the HKTDC, ASGH 2026 gathered approximately 3,000 participants from 43 countries and regions under the theme “Fuelling Healthcare Breakthroughs”, serving as a high-impact thought-Leadership platform for biotech and healthcare innovation and investment.

Meanwhile, with the theme “Innovations Boosting Smart Health Experience”, the Medical Fair welcomed roughly 13,000 buyers from 61 countries and regions to engage in sourcing and networking activities. Together, these premier gatherings facilitated over 1,000 high-quality collaborations through dedicated deal-making and business-matching sessions. These robust figures highlight the city’s powerful role as a global hub for financing, scientific research, and technological deployment.

Expanding Hong Kong’s Role as a Global Healthcare Hub 

During a media group interview, Anna Cheung, Assistant Executive Director of the HKTDC, highlighted how Hong Kong solidifies its position as a super-connector in the global healthcare ecosystem. At the policy level, she pointed out the recent “1+” mechanism, which establishes an easier and faster pathway for new drug registrations. As of February 2026, authorities have approved 19 new drugs under this specific regulatory update. 

Also, the Hong Kong government plans to launch the Center for Medical Products Regulation (CMPR) later this year, operating similarly to “a Hong Kong version of the FDA” to facilitate drug registrations for Chinese and global markets. Cheung also detailed the Greater Bay Area (GBA) Medicine and Equipment Connect Scheme, which provides medical devices and drugs registered in Hong Kong with access to 71 designated healthcare institutions across the GBA without requiring separate registration with the mainland National Authority.

Capitalizing on China Opportunities and “Go Global” Connectivity

A central theme of ASGH 2026 was emerging opportunities in China, specifically aligning with the national 15th Five-Year Plan. Under this strategic blueprint, the central government emphasizes “Healthy China,” pivoting the healthcare focus from disease treatment toward disease prevention. Anna Cheung shared insights on this dynamic, noting that international delegates consistently express a strong desire to understand the mainland market. To assist mainland enterprises in expanding their operations overseas, the HKTDC actively promotes the “Go Global Connect” program. This initiative helps mainland companies identify suitable service providers in Hong Kong. It features a comprehensive database for searching partners and an on-site Go Global Connect zone where Hong Kong experts supply strategic advice to companies eager to scale internationally. 

Xiang Jun, Chairman of 365 Intelligence (Beijing) Medical Technology Co., Ltd, praised the event for providing a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s professional services and the “GoGlobal Connect” initiative. He expressed particular interest in Hong Kong’s research data and subsequently plans to establish research operations in the city.

ASGH Plenary Insights on Pandemic Preparedness

The first plenary session at ASGH 2026, titled “Strengthening Pandemic Preparedness through Global Collaboration,” tackled the pressing need for resilient global health infrastructures. Professor Lo Chung Mau, Secretary for Health of the HKSAR government, delivered a vital keynote speech during this segment. During the interview, Cheung cited the Secretary of Health’s stark reminder that a future pandemic remains a matter of “when,” rather than “if.” She confirmed that the recent hantavirus outbreak made the topic highly relevant, and that healthcare systems worldwide are actively working on pandemic readiness behind the scenes. 

Adding academic weight to the discussion, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar, Vice-Provost (Health) and Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at University College London, addressed the audience. He emphasized the necessity of proactive preparation, stating: “Research platforms need to be developed long in advance of pandemics, and we must invest in infectious disease infrastructure, and beyond, whether it’s in AI technology or in disease management”. These discussions underscored the critical importance of cross-border collaboration in safeguarding public health.

AI Innovations and the Next Frontier in Digital Health 

Artificial intelligence (AI) represents a major paradigm shift in modern healthcare delivery, heavily dominating the dialogue at both ASGH and the Medical Fair. During the thematic session “Transforming Healthcare through Digital Health & AI Innovations,” experts explored how digital technologies fundamentally reshape medical systems. Natasha Chhatrapati, Senior Director and Business Transformation Lead for International at Pfizer Inc., offered a compelling perspective on the speed of innovation. She explained, “AI is compressing timelines across the entire healthcare journey, from drug development and clinical research to how we engage with physicians and how patients consume care”. 

In her media interview, Anna Cheung confirmed that investors currently display immense interest in AI-related technologies during the summit’s deal-making meetings. She also mentioned the brain-computer interface (BCI) as a frequently discussed topic over the two-day event. Many attendees identified BCI as a critically hot sector for investors to watch in the coming years. 

Accelerating Rare Disease Innovations 

Building on the dialogue surrounding AI and advanced therapeutics, the ASGH featured a dedicated panel titled “From Detection to Cure: Accelerating Innovations for Rare Diseases.” While rare diseases collectively affect over 300 million people worldwide, up to 95% of these conditions currently lack effective treatments. Experts at the session discussed how “Federated AI” can securely analyze cross-border medical data to overcome the severe data scarcity inherent in genomic diagnostics without triggering algorithmic hallucinations. 

Beyond diagnostics, panelists highlighted the transformative potential of RNA therapeutics, which have shown the ability to increase clinical success rates to nearly 60% by targeting mRNA directly. However, researchers noted that delivering these therapies to extrahepatic tissues remains a primary challenge. The panel also championed the industry’s necessary transition toward allogeneic, “off-the-shelf” cell therapies to significantly reduce manufacturing costs and expand global patient accessibility.

Unlocking Growth in the Silver Health Economy 

With global populations aging rapidly, the “Silver Health” economy commanded significant attention at the summit. During the second plenary, Jonathan Symonds, Chair of GSK, contextualized the demographic challenge perfectly. He noted, “All developed countries are now facing ageing, low birth rates and an increasing impact of chronic disease. So, it’s no longer just a health system problem, but it’s now an economic problem”. 

This year, the summit featured a session themed “Unlocking Growth in Silver Health: From Precision Medicine to Smart Ageing Innovations,” which discussed the challenges and opportunities linked to population aging. Dr. Alex Mihailidis, Associate Vice-President of International Partnerships at the University of Toronto and Scientific Director at AGE-WELL, provided profound insights into preventing and treating age-related diseases. He offered critical guidance for developing smart aging solutions, asserting: “For a technology to be successful with older people, it’s not just the technology, but also the service delivery model, as well as the practice and policy”. Anna Cheung echoed this sentiment during the interview, confirming that investors specifically hunt for technologies and medicines that can prevent or slow down Alzheimer’s disease.

Empowering Future Medical Research and Dialogue 

Looking toward the future of healthcare innovation, ASGH facilitated critical dialogues regarding the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical practices. The newly introduced “CSO Insights” session brought global scientists together to discuss research strategies. Dr. Li Xiang, Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of the Innovative Medicines Division at Fosun Pharma, emphasized the necessity of strategic planning. He stated, “In our business, it is very important to begin with the end in mind. When you set out to do your discovery program, you must already know what the unmet needs are and how difficult the clinical trials will be”. 

In the same panel, Dr. Lau Lit Fui of Zhaoke Ophthalmology emphasized the need for CSOs to critically evaluate market size, clinical safety, and patient compliance alongside traditional scientific mechanisms. He shared an innovative example of reformulating a dry eye disease medication from a twice-daily eye drop into a once-daily gel, thereby dramatically improving patient compliance and market competitiveness. Prof. Zheng Minghao of Orthocell shared his personal journey of transitioning from academia to industry. He successfully established a regenerative medicine company that grew to a $300 million AUD market capitalization and secured three FDA approvals.

Furthermore, the summit featured Professor Michael Levitt, the 2013 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and Professor of Cancer Research at Stanford University School of Medicine. Prof. Levitt praised Hong Kong’s healthcare system for its unique advantages and high-quality statistical data. He pointed out that this comprehensive data quality makes Hong Kong potentially more valuable for longevity research than the United States or other global regions. Similarly, Professor Bernard Cheung noted that Hong Kong public hospitals possess excellent electronic medical records dating back 30 years, creating a unique asset for studying the long-term progression of diseases worldwide.

Medical Fair Spotlights: MedTech Breakthroughs 

The 17th Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair hosted approximately 300 exhibitors hailing from 10 different countries and regions. The event strategically concentrated on three primary domains: MedTech, GeronTech, and Preventive Healthcare. Within the MedTech sector, Canadian exhibitor Neuroptek Corporation Inc showcased EyeMirage, an innovative solution that extends professional ophthalmic vision examinations directly into homes and schools. The system intelligently leverages the computing power and camera capabilities of smartphones to conduct high-quality vision tests outside traditional clinic settings. 

Additionally, HKG epi Therapeutics Limited, operating out of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, presented a DNA methylation analysis technology for early liver cancer screening. This advanced solution easily identifies and distinguishes differential methylation features among liver cancer, blood, and normal tissues. Clinical research findings published in a leading international academic journal demonstrate that this technology achieves an 88.5% sensitivity for early-stage liver cancer and a 95.7% sensitivity for late-stage cases, representing top-tier global performance.

Showcasing Innovations in GeronTech and Preventive Care 

The GeronTech section of the Medical Fair experienced massive growth, with the number of exhibited smart aging products doubling compared to the previous edition. Exhibitors presented a comprehensive array of products, including smart rehabilitation robots, AI-powered mental health assessment systems, and home-based care devices. Hanshin Technology Limited introduced a Smart Shower Robot featuring an intelligent design that enhances bathing safety and comfort for the elderly while easing the daily workload for caregivers. 

In the Preventive Healthcare category, mainland Chinese exhibitor Guangzhou Supbio Bio-Technology and Science Co., Ltd. displayed the world’s first HIV-1 DNA quantitative testing kit approved for market launch by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). This testing solution supplies a stable and reliable full-disease-course approach, addressing increasingly complex HIV testing needs and exploring functional cures via precision diagnostics. Buyers from emerging markets also attended in large numbers. Dr. Keo Sovann, an otorhinolaryngologist from Orchid Hospital in Cambodia, met with over 10 exhibitors to expand his hospital’s procurement network and expressed strong interest in ordering 20 AI-powered medical imaging units from a Hong Kong company.

Forging Global Partnerships and MoU Agreements 

This year, the ASGH and Medical Fair excelled at building bridges for cross-border healthcare collaborations, culminating in the signing of 10 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). HKSH Medical Group and Siemens Healthineers signed a landmark agreement that establishes HKSH as Siemens Healthineers’ first Photon Counting Computed Tomography Simulation (PCCT-Sim) Reference Site in the entire Asian region. Australian AI clinical documentation platform Heidi Health secured separate agreements with the local medical group EC Healthcare and Hong Kong Metropolitan University. 

Moreover, the HKTDC formalized a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hong Kong Singapore Business Association (HSBA) to further its ‘Go Global’ initiative, establishing Hong Kong as a launchpad for Chinese enterprises targeting Singapore and broader ASEAN markets. Following a visit from the Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of Singapore, Lawrence Wong, in March 2026, both governments committed to deepening their mutual cooperation. The HSBA and HKTDC now plan to strengthen economic ties, drive business development, and enhance tripartite collaboration among Singapore, Hong Kong, and the Chinese mainland.

High-Impact Deal-Making and Tangible Success Stories 

Investment and business matching formed the robust core of ASGH and the Medical Fair. Organizers facilitated over 400 dedicated one-to-one deal-making meetings at ASGH, drawing investment institutions and enterprises from Europe, Asia, the US, and the GBA. Concurrently, the Medical Fair executed more than 670 business matching meetings to advance concrete business discussions. Exhibitor Dresio Limited showcased its contactless physiotherapy assessment system, Accudex, drawing strong interest from buyers across multiple regions. Curtis Wong, Dresio’s Chief Operating Officer, noted strong footfall and high-quality engagements. Following these interactions, Dresio signed an MoU with a Filipino buyer to expand its software into Southeast Asia, expecting the contract value to exceed HK$1 million.

Anna Cheung emphasized that HKTDC values creating meaningful success stories over tracking metrics. She remarked, “It doesn’t end in two days; afterwards, we continue the deal-making services to put companies together”. Cheung shared the success of Heranova Lifesciences, an endometriosis diagnostics start-up that completed a financing round after meeting an investor at last year’s ASGH, and now conducts clinical trials in three Hong Kong public hospitals.

Attracting Global Strategic Enterprises and Start-ups 

Hong Kong’s reputation as a leading financial and commercial hub continues to draw strategic enterprises to its shores. During her interview, Anna Cheung highlighted the pivotal role of the Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises (OASES). This specialized initiative successfully attracted 120 overseas and mainland companies to set up operations in Hong Kong. Notably, 21% of these incoming companies—amounting to 25 enterprises—operate within the medical sector. The ASGH Business Hub and the InnoHealth Showcase featured around 180 healthcare innovation companies from 12 countries and regions, displaying biotechnology, digital health, and medical technology solutions, providing an exceptional stage for start-up founders to accelerate their commercial trajectories. 

First-time Medical Fair exhibitor PalmX Technology Limited demonstrated its palm vein biometric technology at the Start-up Zone and received over 20 inquiries from healthcare institutions in just two days. Vice President Jeffrey Lo noted that these inquiries included potential overseas orders ranging from US$10,000 to several hundred thousand dollars. Another start-up, Homing Pharmaceuticals, led by Professor Leung Kam Tong from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, reconnected with three investors to discuss fundraising strategies aimed at taking their novel CAR-T therapy into first-in-human clinical trials.

Fostering Dialogue Through Themed Seminars

To complement the bustling exhibition floors, the Medical Fair hosted over 50 themed forums and seminars. These tailored sessions provided a platform for leading technology companies, industry experts, and academics to share the latest industry trends, technological innovations, and practical insights. This setup successfully fostered in-depth exchange and inspired trade buyers from around the globe. Highlight sessions included “Accelerating Mental Health Innovation through AI Research and Adoption” and “HKMTA Medical Fair Forum 2026: The Medtech Solutions – Greater Bay Area & Overseas”. 

Other notable panels explored complex regional regulatory landscapes in “The ASEAN Gateway: Navigating Regulations, Capital and Distributions from Hong Kong” and addressed demographic shifts in “Decoding the Demand for Gerontechnology”. These comprehensive dialogues attracted strong audience engagement, ensuring that the flagship events delivered enduring commercial, scientific, and intellectual value to all attendees as they work together to shape the future of global healthcare.
