End of USAID Support in Kenya Raises Concerns Over Health Care and Livelihoods

The cessation of USAID funding has sparked widespread concerns in Kenya, particularly in Kibera, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements. Jeffrey Okoro, Executive Director of CFK Africa, highlighted the impact of the funding shutdown on access to health care services and employment opportunities. He described a growing sense of fear among residents who rely on these programs for essential services such as HIV and tuberculosis treatment.

According to Okoro, the withdrawal of support has disrupted critical health initiatives that serve vulnerable populations in Kibera. These programs previously provided life-saving treatments and preventive care for diseases like HIV and tuberculosis. Additionally, many community members employed through USAID-supported projects have lost their jobs, exacerbating economic challenges in an area already struggling with poverty. The situation has raised questions about how affected communities will adapt to the sudden loss of resources and support systems.
