Fifth Third Bank Launches SmartShield Verification Tool to Combat Impersonation Scams

Fifth Third Bank recently launched a new security feature called SmartShield® to assist customers in identifying and preventing bank impersonation scams. The tool provides real-time verification for communications purportedly sent by the bank, allowing users to confirm the legitimacy of incoming calls, texts, and emails.

The SmartShield® system integrates directly into the bank’s existing digital infrastructure to flag suspicious activity before a transaction occurs. Customers access the feature through the Fifth Third mobile application, where they can cross-reference contact attempts against the bank’s official communication logs. This development follows an increase in industry-wide reports regarding fraudsters posing as financial institution representatives to solicit sensitive account information. By implementing this verification layer, the bank aims to provide a standardized method for clients to authenticate official correspondence and protect their personal financial data.
