The first multicenter study evaluating the use of hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE) with the VitaSmart™ device in pediatric liver transplantation has confirmed its safety and reported favorable outcomes. This research marks a significant milestone as it is the first study of its kind involving any machine perfusion device in pediatric liver transplants. The findings were recognized as one of six “Best Liver Abstracts” at the 13th Congress of the International Pediatric Transplant Association (IPTA), held in Berlin.

The study involved multiple centers and focused on assessing the efficacy and safety of using HOPE technology during pediatric liver transplant procedures. Researchers analyzed data from patients who underwent transplantation with organs preserved using this method, which involves oxygenating and cooling donor livers prior to implantation. The results demonstrated that this approach is safe for use in children and may contribute to improved transplant outcomes. The recognition at IPTA highlights the significance of these findings within the field of pediatric transplantation.
