Fulcrum Therapeutics Halts Sickle Cell Drug Development Following Cancer Risk Concerns
Fulcrum Therapeutics announced on Tuesday that it is discontinuing the development of its lead sickle cell disease asset, a decision that triggered a corporate reorganization and caused the company’s stock price to drop by more than 50% in morning trading. The company halted the program following concerns regarding potential cancer risks associated with the drug’s therapeutic class.
The decision follows a recent industry-wide shift regarding this class of medications. In March, Ipsen withdrew its drug Tazverik—which shares the same chemical classification as the Fulcrum asset—from the market after identifying a risk of secondary malignancies in patients. Fulcrum Therapeutics is now restructuring its business operations in response to the termination of the program.
