Researchers at Hunan Normal University have conducted a detailed study examining intermuscular bones (IBs) in hybrid fish and their parent species, addressing a key issue in aquaculture and fish processing. The study, led by Kaikun Luo and Zhongyuan Shen from the university’s Engineering Research Center of Polyploid Fish Reproduction and Breeding, focuses on the occurrence and characteristics of IBs in teleost fishes. These small bones are known to complicate fish farming operations and processing procedures.

The research specifically analyzed hybrid fish referred to as BTB alongside their parent species to compare the presence, structure, and distribution of IBs. The findings aim to provide insights into genetic factors influencing IB development in hybrids versus their parental counterparts. By shedding light on this aspect of fish biology, the study contributes valuable data for improving breeding techniques and addressing challenges faced by the aquaculture industry.
