IBEC and European Researchers Receive Novo Nordisk Foundation Grant to Study Physics of Living Matter

A consortium of European researchers, including the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), has secured a scientific challenge grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation to study the physics of living matter. Led by Amin Doostmohammadi of the Niels Bohr International Academy, the project—titled ALIVE—investigates the information processing mechanisms that govern how biological tissues organize, sustain their structure, and react to disease.

The research team intends to map the complex flows of information within living systems to better understand the physical principles behind tissue development and maintenance. By integrating expertise from various scientific disciplines, the consortium aims to identify how cells communicate and coordinate to form functional tissues. The project specifically focuses on how these internal processes shift when tissues encounter pathological conditions, providing a framework for observing biological organization at a fundamental physical level.
