KIMS Researchers Develop Cyanide-Free Silver-PTFE Composite Plating for Enhanced Wear Resistance

Researchers at the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) have developed a new silver-plating technology that increases the hardness and wear resistance of materials while maintaining low friction levels. This method utilizes an Ag–PTFE composite plating process to stabilize PTFE nanoparticles within a cyanide-free solution, addressing a long-standing technical challenge in materials engineering.

The research team incorporates a fluorinated surfactant to ensure the uniform distribution of PTFE nanoparticles throughout the silver matrix. By avoiding the use of cyanide, the process offers a more environmentally conscious alternative to traditional plating methods. This composite structure allows the material to withstand prolonged use and mechanical stress, providing a solution for industrial applications that require both durability and efficient surface movement.
