LyondellBasell and Mondelēz International Use Molecular Recycling for Marabou Chocolate Packaging

LyondellBasell (LYB) and Mondelēz International have launched a new flexible packaging initiative for Marabou chocolate bars that utilizes recycled plastic waste. The companies integrated advanced recycling technology to produce the wrappers, marking a shift in how the brand sources materials for its confectionery products.

The collaboration employs LyondellBasell’s CirculenRevive line, which uses a molecular recycling process to convert hard-to-recycle plastic waste into raw materials for new packaging. This process breaks down mixed plastic waste into its chemical building blocks, allowing the resulting material to meet the food-grade safety standards required for chocolate wrappers. By incorporating this recycled content, the companies aim to reduce the reliance on virgin fossil-based plastics in their supply chain. The new packaging maintains the same physical properties and protective qualities as traditional wrappers, ensuring the product remains shelf-stable while transitioning to a circular material model.
