Innovations in life sciences have grown increasingly global. Groundbreaking science is rapidly emerging from academic labs, hospital systems, corporate spinouts, and founder-led ventures across the world. However, access to the essential capital, mentorship, regulatory guidance, and industry networks required to convert raw science into commercially viable, patient-ready therapies remains overwhelmingly concentrated in a few key U.S. hubs.

To bridge this fundamental divide, MassChallenge, a Boston-based, equity-free start-up accelerator, announced the launch of Breakthrough Bio on July 29. Designed as a dedicated, cross-border commercialization engine, the program provides high-potential international biotech and medtech start-ups with direct, structured entry into the U.S. life sciences ecosystem. Leading the international expansion, the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) and Taiwan’s Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB) have signed on as the program’s inaugural partners, establishing dedicated pipelines for their domestic innovation sectors.

Overcoming the Transnational Commercialization Chasm

While early-stage biotech and medtech research thrives globally, international start-ups frequently encounter a steep “commercialization chasm” when attempting to navigate the United States market. Foreign founders regularly struggle to secure critical first-in-class strategic partnerships, navigate complex FDA regulatory frameworks, and establish direct relationships with U.S.-based venture capital firms and clinical development networks.

Breakthrough Bio directly targets these structural bottlenecks by delivering a highly personalized commercialization roadmap tailored to each participating company’s technological maturity, therapeutic focus, and market-entry objectives. Rather than relying on static mentorship, the initiative offers one-on-one engagement with U.S. investors, healthcare executives, regulatory specialists, business development leaders, and institutional partners.

The program officially commences in early January 2027 and is built around intensive, on-the-ground ecosystem immersions in three world-renowned U.S. innovation hubs:

  • Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts: Positions founders directly within the global center of academic excellence, leading healthcare institutions, venture capital, and biopharma corporate offices.
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Centers on the 2027 BIO International Convention to immerse emerging companies inside the largest annual global gathering of biotech professionals.
  • San Diego, California: Links entrepreneurs with healthtech and medtech investors by coordinating with the Life Science Intelligence (LSI) USA summit.

Between immersions, participants continue with personalized virtual engagement from a curated roster of expert mentors, targeted curriculum and hands-on preparation for each conference and ecosystem visit. At each stop, MassChallenge guides participants through the largest and most influential gatherings in the field and brings the full weight of the U.S. ecosystem to bear on their success.

Emphasizing the core philosophy behind the program, Cait Brumme, CEO of MassChallenge, highlighted that exposure alone is insufficient for international scaling:

“Great science is being created everywhere, but the path to market still is not open to everyone. Breakthrough Bio goes beyond exposure programs to give the best companies from these ecosystems the one-to-one support, regulatory guidance, investor relationships and industry connections that accelerate commercialization faster, so their innovations reach patients here (in the U.S.) and in their home countries.”

Israel and Taiwan Lead the Way as Inaugural Partners

The selection of the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) and Taiwan’s Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB) as foundational partners underscores a strategic focus on regions boasting high-density deep-tech and life science sectors. Both entities are serving as trailblazers, demonstrating how public-private partnerships can systematically export domestic innovation to the world’s largest healthcare market.

Israel: Bridging Technological Excellence and Global Scaling

Israel’s life sciences sector is globally recognized for generating cutting-edge digital health, medical device, and biopharma technologies. Yet, translating technological ingenuity into international market adoption presents a persistent hurdle for early-stage Israeli ventures.

Dror Bin, CEO of IIA, outlined the strategic necessity of the collaboration:

“Israel is home to a vibrant innovation ecosystem that consistently produces world-class technologies and companies. One of the most important challenges for early-stage startups, however, is transforming technological excellence into commercial success by securing their first strategic customers and partners in global markets. That is where the Israel Innovation Authority plays a critical role in helping promising startups bridge this critical gap by connecting them with the right ecosystems, expertise and opportunities. Breakthrough Bio provides exactly this kind of bridge, enabling Israeli biotech and medtech companies to validate their technologies, forge strategic partnerships and accelerate their path to international growth.”

  • Israel Application Window: Applications for the inaugural Israeli cohort opened on July 29, 2026, and will close at 12:00 p.m. Israel time on August 18, 2026. Eligible start-up companies can submit applications directly through the official IIA online portal.
Taiwan: Connecting Asia’s Bio-Clusters with U.S. Innovation Hubs

Supported by a robust National Health Insurance system, advanced clinical infrastructure, and state-backed research institutes like the DCB, Taiwan has emerged as one of Asia’s most dynamic life science hubs. To overcome the challenges of “soft-landing” in the U.S. market, Taiwan is leveraging Breakthrough Bio to establish sustainable, dual-coast commercialization pathways.

Dr. Tsai-Kun Li, DCB’s President, detailed how the partnership complements Taiwan’s existing innovation framework:

“With National Health Insurance and science institutes, exemplified by DCB, based on a public-private partnership, Taiwan has built up one of the most dynamic biotech and medtech ecosystems in Asia, with a growing startup pipeline ready to leap into global markets. It has been a great challenge for many of them to soft-land in the U.S. market. Sustained access to investors, regulatory expertise and industry partners who understand how to translate innovation into commercialization in the U.S. is needed … Cooperation with Breakthrough Bio and MassChallenge further opens critical pathways for introducing ‘created in Taiwan’ innovations to the U.S. market. Moreover, enhanced by the Taiwan-Berkeley Health Innovation Accelerator, the joint program driven by Taiwan’s National Development Council and the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, this partnership gives Taiwanese innovations access to complementary networks and commercialization resources across both the East and West Coasts.”

  • Taiwan Application Window: Applications for the Taiwanese cohort open on September 1, 2026, and close on October 16, 2026, via MassChallenge and DCB. Eligibility details and application information will be available through both organizations closer to the opening date.

MassChallenge as a Supporter of High-Impact Global Innovation

Powering Breakthrough Bio is MassChallenge’s established global acceleration network. Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, MassChallenge operates as a zero-equity, non-profit organization dedicated to backing founders who tackle complex, systems-critical challenges where the path to market is hardest.

By sustaining its operations through corporate partnerships, public grants, and strategic sponsorships, MassChallenge supports high-impact entrepreneurs without demanding equity or ownership stakes. To date, the MassChallenge global network has achieved substantial scale:

  • Supported Companies: Provided assistance to more than 5,000 alumni start-ups operating within high-stake and highly-regulated sectors, including financial technology, healthcare, security and resiliency, and climate and sustainability, achieving a survival rate of about 70% (significantly higher than the global average).
  • Job Creation: The network has generated over 90,000 jobs worldwide, significantly impacting the global innovation economy.
  • Funding Secured: Since 2009, over $27 billion in total capital has been collectively raised by accelerated companies (up to 2026).
  • Global Footprint: Maintains active operational hubs across the U.S. (Massachusetts and Texas), Israel, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Through the launch of Breakthrough Bio, MassChallenge extends its zero-equity framework into specialized life sciences commercialization, ensuring that high-impact medical innovations can seamlessly transition from international discovery to global patient impact.
