New Analytical Framework Separates Genetic Inheritance from Environmental Influences in Child Development

Researchers from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health have developed a new analytical framework to distinguish between direct genetic inheritance and indirect environmental influences passed from parents to children. The study, published in the journal *Cell Genomics*, provides a method for isolating how parental traits affect offspring development through non-genetic pathways, such as the home environment or parental behavior.

The research team designed this model to address the long-standing challenge of separating the effects of shared genes from the effects of shared environments. By applying this framework to large-scale data, the scientists identified specific instances where parental characteristics influence a child’s development independently of the DNA sequences inherited at conception. This approach allows investigators to quantify the extent to which environmental factors—often referred to as “genetic nurture”—contribute to human traits. The findings offer a new tool for geneticists and social scientists to refine their understanding of how both biological and environmental factors shape individual development over time.
