New Test Detects Biomarkers for Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration, a Rare Dementia Affecting Over 57 Million Globally

A new ultrasensitive test can detect biomarkers for frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), a rare form of dementia. Currently, biomarkers exist for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but not for FTLD or its subtypes. Dementia affects over 57 million people globally, and experts project this number to double in the next two decades.

The permanent loss of cognitive abilities associated with dementia impacts daily function and can stem from various brain pathologies. While Alzheimer’s disease is a well-known cause, other conditions like frontotemporal lobar degeneration can also lead to dementia. The new test offers a way to identify this rarer pathology through specific biomarkers, which was previously unavailable.
