OPAL Fuels and GFL Environmental Open Two New Renewable Natural Gas Facilities in Alabama and Georgia

OPAL Fuels and GFL Environmental have launched two new renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities in Alabama and Georgia as part of a joint effort to expand their production capacity. These projects convert landfill gas into pipeline-quality renewable fuel, which the companies intend to supply to the transportation sector to reduce carbon emissions.

The new facilities utilize gas captured from GFL Environmental’s landfills, which OPAL Fuels processes and distributes through its infrastructure. The Alabama project operates at the Turkey Trot Landfill in McKenzie, while the Georgia facility is located at the South Shelby Landfill in Pelham. Both sites employ specialized technology to refine raw methane into RNG, a process that prevents the gas from entering the atmosphere. These projects represent the latest phase of a long-term partnership between the two companies, which focuses on developing RNG infrastructure across GFL’s North American landfill network.
