PBM-Affiliated Pharmacies Account for Two-Thirds of Specialty Drug Revenues in 2024 Analysis
A recent analysis conducted by the Drug Channels Institute (DCI) highlights the continued dominance of pharmacy benefit manager (PBM)-affiliated specialty pharmacies in the dispensing of specialty drugs. The report identifies nearly 1,900 accredited specialty pharmacy locations and provides updated rankings, market shares, and revenue estimates for the top 15 specialty pharmacies in 2024. According to the findings, pharmacies tied to the three largest PBMs accounted for approximately two-thirds of prescription revenues from pharmacy-dispensed specialty medications.
The report also examines how these PBM-affiliated pharmacies contribute to overall profitability within the PBM sector. Additionally, it notes an increasing presence of provider- and health system-owned dispensing channels in this market segment. While “specialty” remains largely synonymous with PBM affiliation, DCI’s analysis sheds light on evolving dynamics within this space as independent and health system-linked entities gain traction.
Further details about these findings are available through DCI’s full report.
