RADA16 Hydrogel Delivery of Carnosic Acid Reduces Retinal Cell Death in Ocular Hypertension Models

Researchers have developed a method to deliver carnosic acid directly into the eye using a RADA16 peptide hydrogel to protect retinal cells during episodes of acute ocular hypertension. The study, published in *Scientific Reports*, demonstrates that this sustained-release system maintains therapeutic levels of the compound within the vitreous humor, effectively reducing cell death in the retina following pressure-related injury.

The research team utilized the RADA16 hydrogel as a scaffold to encapsulate carnosic acid, a natural antioxidant known for its neuroprotective properties. By injecting this hydrogel into the eye, the scientists created a reservoir that releases the medication gradually over an extended period. In laboratory tests involving models of acute ocular hypertension—a condition characterized by a sudden, dangerous spike in eye pressure—the treated subjects showed significantly higher survival rates of retinal ganglion cells compared to those that did not receive the hydrogel treatment. The findings indicate that the hydrogel maintains the structural integrity of the retina by mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation triggered by high intraocular pressure.
