Rising US Tariffs on Indian Imports Threaten Affordable Generic Drug Supply

Escalating tariffs imposed under current U.S. trade policies are raising concerns about their potential impact on the pharmaceutical supply chain between the United States and India, according to industry expert Ankit Shrivastava. The measures may disrupt access to generic drugs, increase healthcare costs for American patients, and destabilize a critical international supply corridor that supports the availability of affordable medications.

India is a major supplier of generic pharmaceuticals to the United States, providing essential medicines at lower costs compared to branded alternatives. However, rising tariffs on imported goods could significantly affect this flow of products. Experts warn that these trade barriers might lead to higher production costs for Indian manufacturers, which could then be passed on to American consumers in the form of increased drug prices. Additionally, such disruptions may strain an already delicate global supply chain and hinder timely access to life-saving medications for millions of patients in the U.S.
