Saliva Proteomic Analysis Identifies Molecular Markers of Sleep Deprivation

Researchers have identified molecular markers in human saliva that indicate sleep deprivation, marking a potential step toward developing a non-invasive clinical test for fatigue. A study published in the *Journal of Proteome Research* details how scientists compared the saliva samples of 20 men after a full night of sleep and again after 24 hours of wakefulness to isolate specific biological changes.

The study focused on the physiological impact of sleep loss, which often impairs alertness and coordination to a degree comparable to alcohol intoxication. By analyzing the proteomic composition of the participants’ saliva, the research team pinpointed distinct molecular differences between the rested and sleep-deprived states. These findings provide a baseline for future diagnostic tools intended to measure objective levels of fatigue, a condition that currently lacks a standardized clinical assessment method.
