**Chemists Confirm 67-Year-Old Vitamin B1 Theory by Stabilizing Reactive Molecule**

Researchers have validated a theory proposed in 1958 regarding vitamin B1 by successfully stabilizing a reactive molecule known as a carbene in water. This achievement addresses a longstanding biochemical question and may pave the way for more environmentally friendly and efficient pharmaceutical production methods.

Carbenes are carbon atoms with only six valence electrons, making them chemically unstable and highly reactive. Typically, carbon achieves stability with eight electrons surrounding it. The stabilization of this molecule in water was previously considered unattainable due to its inherent instability. Scientists have now demonstrated that this process is possible, confirming the decades-old hypothesis about vitamin B1’s molecular behavior.

The findings resolve an enduring scientific puzzle while also presenting potential applications in green chemistry, particularly in drug manufacturing processes. Further research may explore how this stabilization technique can be utilized to improve efficiency and sustainability within the pharmaceutical industry.
