Researchers at the Stevens Institute of Technology have identified a phenomenon known as a continental shelf seiche as the cause of unexpected flooding following major hurricanes in New York and New Jersey. The study, which utilized historical storm data and computational modeling, clarifies that these post-storm flood events were previously misidentified as tsunamis.

The research team analyzed decades of data to track how these seiches—oscillations of water within a basin—occur after a storm system has already moved through an area. These oscillations can generate significant water level increases hours after the initial weather event subsides, creating flooding risks that persist long after the primary storm surge. By distinguishing these seiches from tsunamis, the scientists aim to improve the accuracy of future flood risk assessments and emergency response planning for coastal regions.
