Study Finds Brain Maintains Cognitive Fluidity During Transition Between Wakefulness and Sleep

A study published in *Cell Reports* indicates that the transition between wakefulness and sleep is less distinct than previously understood, allowing for cognitive processes typically associated with one state to occur in the other. Researchers found that individuals can experience dream-like imagery while still awake and continue to engage in goal-oriented planning after the onset of sleep.

The findings challenge the traditional view that thinking and dreaming occupy separate, clearly defined periods of consciousness. By monitoring participants as they drifted off, the study observed that the brain maintains a level of fluidity that allows for the overlap of these states. This research suggests that the boundary between being awake and being asleep is porous, meaning the mind does not immediately switch from one mode of operation to the other upon falling asleep.
