Study Links Antidepressants to Accelerated Cognitive Decline in Dementia Patients
In a recent study analyzing data from 18,740 dementia patients, researchers have found evidence suggesting that antidepressants, specifically selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), may contribute to accelerated cognitive decline. The study focused on commonly prescribed SSRIs such as escitalopram, citalopram, and sertraline.
The findings indicate that dementia patients who were administered these antidepressants exhibited a faster rate of cognitive deterioration compared to those not receiving such medications. This research adds a critical dimension to the understanding of the potential side effects associated with antidepressants in the context of neurodegenerative diseases.
