On January 21, 2025, the “Stargate Project” officially launched. This U.S.-led initiative in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, with an unprecedented $500 billion investment, has sparked global attention and discussions on its technological ambitions, economic implications, and geopolitical ramifications. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the project at the White House, describing it as “the largest AI infrastructure project in history“ and emphasizing its role in securing the future of technology within the United States. This collaboration is set to begin with an initial investment of $100 billion, with the total potentially growing to five times that amount.
AGI and ASI Development at the Core of Stargate Project, Pushing for Human-Like Cognitive Systems and Superintelligent Machines
Masayoshi Son of SoftBank, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Larry Ellison of Oracle joined Trump at the White House shortly after his inauguration. The three leaders acknowledged Trump’s support in facilitating the project, despite its construction already being underway and its origins dating back to 2024.
The Stargate Project brings together some of the biggest names in tech and finance to drive its ambitious vision. OpenAI is at the forefront, coordinating technology and developing advanced AI systems. SoftBank, led by Masayoshi Son, adds its deep expertise and financial muscle in AI investments. Oracle steps in with robust cloud infrastructure to ensure scalable and stable data processing, while the MGX Fund, backed by Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, showcases the Middle East’s growing influence in the global tech scene.
Big players like NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Arm are also heavily involved, working on the core technologies that power the project. Together, these companies are building a strong, integrated ecosystem of software, hardware, and infrastructure. Trump stated, “It’s big money and high-quality people,” and further emphasized that it is “a resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential” under his new administration.
The project will primarily aim to focus on the development and application of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). AGI systems, which are utilized to match or surpass human cognitive and economic capabilities, are seen as crucial in laying the foundation for Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI). For the U.S., achieving AGI is not only a symbol of technological supremacy but also a critical lever to maintain its global technological dominance.
Elon Musk Criticizes Stargate Project’s “Unrealistic” Scale and Financial Transparency Issues
This U.S. initiative is widely seen as a countermeasure to China’s rapid advancements in AI, exemplified by open-source AI models like DeepSeek R1. The Stargate Project represents a strategic move to reclaim leadership in AI technology, strengthen America’s technological edge, and attract international talent and capital.
“What we want to do is we want to keep it in this country,” Mr. Trump said. “China is a competitor, others are competitors. We want to be in this country, and we’re making it available. I’m gonna help a lot through emergency declarations, because we have an emergency, we have to get this stuff built. So they have to produce a lot of electricity. And we’ll make it possible for them to get this production done easily, at their own plants if they want.”
Despite its grand vision, industry experts have raised concerns about the project’s financial transparency. Elon Musk, founder of OpenAI’s competitor xAI, criticized the scale as “unrealistic” and warned against global technology development being overly reliant on the U.S. Historical precedents, such as the failed Foxconn investment in Wisconsin, also cast doubts on the project’s execution.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, with a pointed remark at Musk, who is developing a chatbot called Grok, invited him to “come visit the first site already under way” and added, “I realize what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role I hope you’ll mostly put [America] first.” When asked if Musk had undermined the president on AI, Trump ally Steve Bannon responded on Wednesday, “No doubt about it. The president said it’s a $500 billion joint venture. Why does Elon Musk criticize the president after he talks about it?”
