UC San Diego Researchers Patch SMS Spoofing Vulnerability in Carrier Email Gateways

Researchers at the University of California San Diego recently identified and resolved a security vulnerability that allowed attackers to spoof text messages across major telecommunications carriers, including Verizon and Apple. The flaw exploited a weakness in the way mobile networks process text messages sent through email gateways, which enabled unauthorized parties to impersonate legitimate contacts.

The vulnerability originated from the integration between email systems and Short Message Service (SMS) protocols. By leveraging this communication bridge, attackers could send messages that appeared to originate from a trusted source, potentially misleading recipients. Following the discovery, the research team collaborated with industry stakeholders to implement patches across affected networks and devices.
