UK Study: Adults with Higher Autistic Traits Face Increased Anxiety as They Age

A recent UK study indicates that a subset of middle-aged and older adults who exhibit higher levels of autistic traits are more susceptible to increasing anxiety as they get older, even though most people in this age group report low anxiety levels.

The study examined a large sample of adults in the UK and found that while the majority reported stable and low anxiety, a significant minority with pronounced autistic traits experienced a notable increase in their anxiety levels over time. Researchers observed that these individuals were predisposed to a trajectory of worsening anxiety as they aged, setting them apart from their peers who did not share the same traits. These findings highlight the need for targeted support and interventions for older adults with autistic traits to address and mitigate the potential rise in anxiety.
