Researchers at the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture are developing a new method to control the soybean cyst nematode by disrupting the pest’s ability to feed on soybean plants. This microscopic worm causes more than $1 billion in annual losses for soybean farmers across the United States, prompting scientists to investigate biological mechanisms that prevent the parasite from establishing a food source within the crop.

The nematode typically survives by manipulating the plant’s vascular system to create a specialized feeding site, which allows the parasite to extract nutrients throughout its life cycle. By identifying the specific biological pathways the nematode uses to initiate these feeding structures, the research team aims to block the process entirely. This approach focuses on starving the nematode rather than relying on traditional chemical pesticides. The study seeks to provide a sustainable management tool for farmers as they contend with the significant economic impact of these infestations.
