University of Otago Researchers Investigate Drug Resistance Mechanisms in Tuberculosis

Researchers from the University of Otago have contributed to two significant studies addressing drug-resistant strains of *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis. These findings mark progress in understanding and combating antibiotic resistance, a major obstacle in global public health efforts. Dr. Matthew McNeil, a co-author on both studies and a member of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the university, emphasized the severity of tuberculosis as a “massive public health problem” that remains difficult to tackle.

The studies focus on identifying mechanisms behind drug resistance in *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* and exploring potential strategies to counteract this issue. Tuberculosis continues to pose challenges worldwide due to its ability to develop resistance against commonly used antibiotics, complicating treatment options. The collaborative research aims to provide insights into overcoming these barriers, offering hope for more effective interventions in the future.
