Researchers from the University of Otago have contributed to two significant studies addressing drug-resistant strains of *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis. These findings mark progress in understanding and combating antibiotic resistance, which remains a critical challenge in global public health. Dr. Matthew McNeil, a co-author on both studies and a member of the university’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology, emphasized the severity of tuberculosis as a “massive public health problem” that is difficult to tackle.

The studies focused on identifying mechanisms behind drug resistance in *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* and exploring potential strategies to counteract this issue. Tuberculosis continues to pose serious threats worldwide due to its ability to resist treatment with existing antibiotics. The collaborative research efforts aim to provide insights into how these resistant strains develop and persist, offering valuable information for future therapeutic approaches. Researchers involved hope their findings will contribute to advancing solutions for one of the most pressing challenges in infectious disease management today.
