University of Otago Study Finds Smart Mouthguard Models Fail to Account for Player Physiological Differences

A new study from the University of Otago–Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka indicates that current analytical models for smart mouthguards fail to account for variations in sex, age, and physical size among rugby players. Published in the *Journal of Biomechanics*, the research suggests that this standardized approach to data interpretation may result in the failure to identify serious head injuries.

The researchers examined how existing technology processes impact data, noting that the current “one-size-fits-all” methodology applies uniform thresholds to all users regardless of their individual physiological differences. By neglecting these variables, the current diagnostic models may overlook significant concussive events that occur during play. The study highlights a potential gap in injury monitoring, as the data processing systems do not currently adjust for the diverse physical profiles of athletes who wear the devices.
