Geoff Geise, an associate professor of chemical engineering at the University of Virginia, recently received the North American Membrane Society (NAMS) Permeance Prize for Mid-Career Excellence. The organization grants this award to researchers who demonstrate significant contributions to the field of membrane science and technology during the middle stages of their careers.

Geise’s research focuses on the development of membranes for non-aqueous redox flow batteries, a technology designed to store renewable energy on a large scale. These batteries utilize electrically charged ions suspended in organic, solvent-based liquids to hold energy. Because the efficiency and durability of these systems depend heavily on the performance of the internal membrane, Geise’s work examines how these materials interact with various solvents and ions. His findings aim to address technical challenges regarding the stability and longevity of energy storage systems, which remain a primary obstacle in the transition to renewable power sources.
