Verde AgriTech and Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions Partner to Test Biochar in Road Construction

Verde AgriTech and Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions have entered into a commercial partnership to integrate engineered biochar into asphalt production for road construction. The collaboration aims to test and implement the use of biochar as a sustainable additive in paving materials, with the companies focusing on the material’s potential to improve road durability and carbon sequestration.

The agreement establishes a framework for the two companies to combine Verde’s biochar production capabilities with Ergon’s infrastructure and asphalt distribution network. Technical teams from both organizations will conduct trials to determine how engineered biochar interacts with bitumen and other paving components. These tests seek to measure the performance of biochar-enhanced asphalt under various environmental conditions and traffic loads. By incorporating this material, the companies intend to evaluate whether biochar can serve as a viable alternative to traditional additives while simultaneously capturing carbon within the road surface. The partnership marks a shift toward exploring bio-based materials in large-scale civil engineering projects.
