2026: The Promise of Synthetic Biology

The field now plays an imperative role in boosting healthcare, manufacturing, agritech, environment, and more, bringing up a faster, resilient, and more profitable manufacturing capability in the face of the looming global supply chain crisis.

 

Synthetic biology, defined as the engineering of biological organisms, introduces a rational and systematic way to design and create something useful. The scope of the field itself is difficult to define but has given rise to a wellspring of profit opportunities. It has been said that twenty years from now, everybody will have eaten, worn, used, or been treated with products resulting from synthetic biology manufacturing processes.
