Fifth HIV Patient Cured After Stem Cell Transplant in Germany
A man in Germany has become the latest person to have been “cured” of HIV after receiving HIV-resistant stem cells through a bone marrow transplant intended to treat leukemia. According to the study published in the journal Nature Medicine on February 20, the man was monitored for more than nine years after the transplantation in 2013 and declared free of the virus, bringing hope to the estimated 40 million people living with the disease worldwide.
