Indonesian-American Cytogeneticist Joe Hin Tjio was Born
Joe Hin Tjio (November 2, 1919 – November 27, 2001) was an Indonesian-born American cytogeneticist. During his vacation stay at the Institute of Genetics of the University of Lund in Sweden as a visiting scientist, Tijo successfully isolated chromosomes from cell nucleus proving that a normal human cell has 23 pairs of chromosome. He was the first person to recognize that human cell has 46 chromosomes instead of 48 chromosomes which had been widely believed before his epochal discovery in December, 1955. Tijo set up a firm foundation for the study in chromosomal structure and related mechanism.
