November 17, 1982: Genome of Simian Sarcoma Virus was Completely Sequenced
The genome sequence of simian sarcoma virus (SSV), first isolated from a fibrosarcoma in a woolly monkey, was completed in 1982, and the result was published in PNAS journal. The whole genome of SSV consists of 5,779 nucleotide base. A transforming gene, v-sis, was discovered and determined as an important carcinogenic gene.
