8 March, 2012: Gorilla Genome Sequencing Decrypted
An international team lead by the Sanger Institute have completed the genome sequence for the gorilla, the last genus of the living great apes to have its genome decoded. The research is the first time scientists have been able to compare the genomes of all four living great apes: humans, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans Overall, the data suggest that gorillas split from their common ancestor with humans and chimps about 10 million years ago, and that chimps and humans split from each other about 4 million years after that.
