March 19, 1991: Genetic-Modified Bacteria E. Coli Granted by USPTO
On March 19, 1991, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued a patent US5000000A to scientists at the University of Florida for their invention of genetic-modified Escherichia coli strains with ability to produce ethanol as a fermentation product. The genetically modified bacterial strains can convert wood, whey, waste paper, or garden waste into ethanol as fuel.
