Professor Chakrabarty (April 4, 1938 – present), a Bengali American microbiologist and scientist, is well-known for his work in directed evolution. He developed a genetically engineered bacterial species, called Pseudomonas putida which became a bioremedy for oil pollution, using plasmid transfer while working at the General Electric Company (GE Company). The genetically engineered bacteria then led to a dispute over its patent, the famous Supreme Court case of Diamond v. Chakrabarty.
