On May 2, 2013, the U.S. research team published a seven-year research report in the American Journal of Human Genetics, announcing the first genetic test to predict benefits of gastric bypass surgery, also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The test results can be used to determine the long-term success rate of RYGB with up to 70% of accuracy. Discovery of the correlation between certain genes and the effect of RYGB stands for a strong evidence of how genetic factors influence patients’ response to surgery, and also represents a breakthrough in genetic technology on improving clinical medicne.
