November 19, 1943: American Genetictist Philip Leder was Born
Philip Leder (November 19, 1934 – present) is an American geneticist best known for his work with Marshall Nirenberg in the Nirenberg and Leder experiment elucidating the triplet nature of the genetic code. Another focus of his research is on the structure of genes which carry the code for antibody molecules explaining how the enormous diversity of antibody molecules are formed by a limited number of encoded genes. Leder was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1991, and has been awarded an hononary doctoral degree from the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel in November 2015 affirming his scientific achievements.
